At a recent Council Meeting the question was asked what could be done to achieve Fairtrade status for High Wycombe
The comment back from a Conservative Member was that was there was nothing that our council could do.
Im amazed at such a response.
For the benefit of our readers and the leader of the council —

To become a Fairtrade Town (or any other populated area), 5 goals must be met:

  1. The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
  2. A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to population)
  3. Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
  4. Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
  5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.
  6. To apply and find out more, download the Fairtrade Town Goals and Action Guide (PDF) Or order a hard copy.

Your Liberal Democrat Councillors are pressing for protection of our historic High Street shops and market.

We hear quite a lot about the thousands of visitors coming to High Wycombe with the opening of Eden. I’m sure we will have a lot of new visitors to the shopping centre
However let’s not forget about our traditional High Street shops and Market. Despite numerous requests we are not seeing investment in this area ahead of the opening of Eden.
It had been suggested that footfall will drop in this area of the town despite the opening of Eden. We are also told the opening of Eden will bring new shoppers to the town. No one really knows—this is concerning!

We need to understand the dynamics and shopping patterns of the High Street now to be able to manage the dynamics and changes to retail and shopping patterns in this area.
Since August 2007 we have been promised that the High Street shopping footfall patterns would be monitored . This is supposed to be managed by the town centre video cameras.

December 2007 and we are still waiting for the tracking of shoppers to be done. If it is not running by early January 2008 its going to be too late to collect robust shopper data.

Why do we need to track the footfall?
There is concerns that if the trade drops off in the High Street that the shops and market traders businesses would suffer. No one in Wycombe would want to see a situation where we find our unique shops and markets under financial pressure and be accused of Eden killing off local businesses. Wycombe would lose some of its uniqueness. We need to be in a position to track and monitor the changes so we can request that our council make necessary changes to protect this part of our shopping heritage.

Your Liberal Democrat Councillors are posing questions — when will the shopper footfall tracking be in place.
To date we have not been given a date.

The Marsh First School excelled itself last night with the school childrens production of “Rock the Baby”.
The school hall was filled with proud parents, friends, governors and local councillors who were present for the production

A well done to the Headteacher, teachers, PTA, parents and the children for putting on such a good show.
It is brilliant to see that the school continues to be a positive contribution to the Ryemead and Micklefield area
Cllr Ray Farmer and I look forward to the next event.

Wycombe Liberal Democrats have just selected Steve Guy as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC).

Steve has lived in Wycombe for 5 years and is a governor of Sir William Ramsay School.

Immediately after his selection Steve Guy said “I am delighted to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat PPC.  I am relishing the opportunity to engage with the people of Wycombe, and to offer them a real choice at the next election.

“As the Parliamentary Spokesperson for Wycombe I will be campaigning hard to build on our success in May this year.  The Liberal Democrats gained seats from the Conservatives – increasing their representation on Wycombe District Council.  Labour can no longer challenge the Tories in Wycombe.  Indeed, on Bucks County Council it is the Liberal Democrats who are the official opposition.  Only the Liberal Democrats can meet that challenge in Wycombe” continued Steve.

Wendy Guy, Chairperson of Wycombe Liberal Democrats (and wife of Steve) said after the result was declared: “I am proud on both a personal and an official level that Steve is our PPC. He is a person of great integrity and determination. He will be a great asset to our team”.
