This weekend at conference I was inspired by other Liberal Democrats. They like us are small groups of people that share common principles. They like us desire change in their District and County Councils. They like us want a socially just and a fair society for all. They like us see the answers in the policies of Liberalism and they like us desire a Liberal Democrat Party leading our country.

I heard a testimony from Watford District Council in all they had achieved after winning in what was a Labour strong hold for 20 years. Years of neglect and “Oh that can’t be done” was replaced by an enthusiastic team of Liberals who said ‘This can be done’ and they did deliver!

We are the next success story in our local council, of that I am sure. We like them are a group of people (all be it small at present) with passion and belief that we can make a difference.
I admire Ian, Maurice, Marie, Neil and Frances who have been active for so long in this town and still believe in each other. I respect Richard’s viewpoint and strong sense of core liberal values. I am always impressed by Derek’s knowledge of economics and yes I even love Trevor’s sense of spirit and the desire to win!

I listened today to similar people like us and it has made me even more convinced that we, with enough effort and continued hard work can make a difference in Wycombe.

So Ryemead has been called and I know that we have already fought two by elections recently however there are no prizes for second place and we should now all unite behind Trevor and Ian to deliver a Liberal Democrat on the District and County Councils.

In view of the recent announcement from Charles Kennedy, the High Wycombe Liberal Democrats would like to pay tribute to Charles and to the fantastic job he has done as the leader of our party over the past six years.

He has led us through two general elections where we have increased our number of MPs on each occasion. He has won support for our party at local and national level in particular with his principled stance on the war in Iraq.

We are deeply saddened to hear that he has been battling with a drink problem which affects so many families today. We hope that he and his family will now be granted the privacy they deserve.

We would also like to thank those who have called us from other political parties giving their support and understanding to the problems he has faced.

We our proud to be part of the most democratic of all the political parties and we thank Charles for giving us the opportunity to elect his successor in a free and open process.

We would like to extend to Charles and his family our best wishes for the future and hope that he will continue to play a major role within our party.
