Happy Birthday Gordon!
Written by morty on June 27, 2008 – 9:05 am -Having been in the job for just 1 year the voters of Henley gave Gordon Brown a most unwelcome birthday present. In this safe Conservative seat, Labour was not only beaten by the Liberal Democrats but also by the Greens. The result had experts rushing to their history books to see whether there has been any example of the governing party coming 5th in a By-Election before. In fact Labour only hung onto 5th place by 223 votes.
Commenting on the result of the Henley-on-Thames by-election, Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg said:
“This is a good result for the Liberal Democrats and my congratulations go to Stephen Kearney and his team for an excellent campaign.
“After one year in the job Gordon Brown cannot even get enough support to save his deposit.”
“Labour’s days are well and truly over and it is the Liberal Democrats who are challenging the Conservatives in the south and Labour in the north.”

Stephen Kearney (Liberal Democrat): 9,680 (+1.7%)
