Parking in Ryemead - Cllr Trevor Snaith - January 2008

Written by Trevor Snaith on January 20, 2008 – 10:16 pm -

Be careful where you park - even outside your home!

Today I was contacted by a local resident in Kingsmead Road. He had been given a parking ticket for causing an obstruction - outside his home!

It appears that the parking in Kingsmead car park was full and visitors were parking along the road opposite his home.

It seems the amount of public parking for some leisure facilities in Ryemead is becoming an issue. This is a problem that needs addressing.

The answer isn’t to simply put a parking ticket on the cars. That is not treating the underlying cause. The lack of off road public parking and the lack of a cohesive public transport strategy is the real issue.

Specific problems identified by residents in several areas of Ryemead -

1. Rugby Club public car park off Kingsmead Road.

2. Kingsmead Netball car park in Fennels Road

3. Fitness First area in the new retail park.

4. The Rye during summer holiday months and some Sundays.

In the interim be vigilant and ensure your car is not in a position where it could be ticketed!

However territorial people may feel about it, the fact of the matter is that the roadway outside your house is NOT part of your property, and you have no more right to park there than to park on any other stretch of roadway. The problem is stated as being “not enough off-road public parking”, but how much MORE of Wycombe are we supposed to agree to have tarmacced-over?! The REAL problem is too many cars, and too much unthinking reliance on them. ONE of the answers to that is to REDUCE available parking space, not to increase it. If you repeatedly can’t find a place to park (but there is a public transport or ’soft-mode’ alternative available, then the evidence is that people reduce their use of cars and switch modes - which is what we ought to be seeking to achieve.

    Hi Neil
Agree totally on need for buses
Whats needed is a cohesive transport strategy and a bus service for 21st Century — unfortunatelly Bucks Council and its partners dont deliver the service we need .They are not investing in delivering the level of service to allow people to leave cars at home — assuming you can park your car at home and there is a parking space in the area!
