Setting out his priorities after being elected as party leader on December 18th, Nick Clegg said:

“I am greatly honoured to have been chosen by my fellow party members to be the new leader of the Liberal Democrats.

“Throughout Wycombe Liberal Democrats are already working hard to reach out to local people and listen to their concerns. In my leadership I will be taking that spirit nationwide, moving beyond party politics and making liberalism connect with the millions of people who share our values.

“Labour and the Conservatives have failed Britain’s families. I will lead my party to change politics, and change Britain, for the better. Only the Liberal Democrats are committed to giving the people of Wycombe a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives, by shifting power away from Westminster and back to local communities.

“I will fight for a fair deal for Britain’s families, campaign tirelessly to cut crime, and improve our NHS so it delivers the care people need.”

Commenting Steve Guy, Wycombe Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman said:

“Nick Clegg is going to be a great leader. Labour and the Conservatives share so many policies. The time has come for a politician who will speak up for real people and local communities – like ours in Wycombe”

He’s not going to be speaking for those who belive in God?

  2. Steve Guy Says:

Speaking as someone who does believe (you’ll find that is the correct spelling, by the way) in God, does that mean that if I am elected I cannot speak for anyone who doesn’t? What utter nonsense! What the people of Wycombe need are representatives who can speak for all, regardless of their faith. The Liberal Democrats do not discriminate on grounds of religion. On my membership card it says we believe in “a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity”. Nick and I may differ on belief in God, but we share those core values. What do you believe in, Mrs Clarke (apart from the importance of good grammar?).

  3. Neil Timberlake Says:

Speaking as an atheist, I am particularly pleased to welcome Nick Clegg as the new party leader, and to welcome a politician who is not tempted to ape the humbug and piety of others (I’m thinking of you, Tony Blair!) who profess a faith in God whilst pursuing policies of utter immorality, such as the illegal invasion of Iraq.

  4. Lesley Says:

A godless, spiritually bankrupt mass of semi-humanity

…and a Merry Christmas to you, Mrs Clarke! I always welcome a spirited debate – but hurling insults around is not very edifying.

  6. Phil Alexander Says:

I welcome the prospect of a major party leader undefiled by religion. If Cllr Clarke’s comments are an example of what being “godly” means, then personally I am far happier being godless. And as for being “spiritually bankrupt”, it seems rather likely that the above post is a result of a little bit too much spirit. Cheers!

Children, children! I think that “many lamps, one light” is the best way to to shine on the way ahead.
