Why is Wycombe not a “Fairtrade town”? – Cllr Trevor Snaith – Dec 2007

At a recent Council Meeting the question was asked what could be done to achieve Fairtrade status for High Wycombe
The comment back from a Conservative Member was that was there was nothing that our council could do.
Im amazed at such a response.
For the benefit of our readers and the leader of the council —

To become a Fairtrade Town (or any other populated area), 5 goals must be met:

  1. The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
  2. A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to population)
  3. Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
  4. Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
  5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.

    The biggest retail supporter of Fairtrade is the Co-operative movement who have thousands of outlets around the country including many within Wycombe District.

    Agree –thanks for comments co-operator
    Seems that our Tory controlled council cant find the time or resources to make Fairtrade for Wycombe Town happen.

    Seems our leader of council position (Cllr L Clarke) is –
    “It is for the individual shops and companies to take the initiative and once they ask us to endorse their way forward then we shall do that. We simply do not have the staff to take on this task. We simply do not have the resource”.

    Your Liberal Democrat team and Councillors are happy to forward letters to Council from shops and companies than want to see Wycombe become a Fairtrade town. Alternatively e mail Tory Leader of council lesley_clarke@wycombe.gov.uk and copy in Lib Dem councillor trevor_snaith@wycombe.gov.uk
