Lib Dem vote rises in safe Tory seat
Written by morty on November 10, 2006 – 12:44 am -The result has been declared for the Greater Hughenden By-Election
William Barnes (Liberal Democrat) 549
Larry Haig (Conservative) 1040 -(elected)
Spoilt paper 7, Turnout 24.26%
The last time the seat was fought in 2003 the Liberal Democrats polled under 15% of the vote. This election saw a rise to 34.55%. Labour failed to field a candidate this time which outlines the mess in which the Wycombe Labour party finds itself in.
With grateful thanks to all our supporters who helped make this credible result possible and to our excellent candidate William Barnes.

As the Greater Hughenden Ward falls outside the Wycombe Labour Party catchment area, it was not surprising that the Wycombe Labour Party did not front a candidate.
“Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story” seems to be the motto of the Liberal Democrats!

So does this mean that the boundary changes were on a different date for the Labour Party?

Well to be fair the Parliamentary boundaries don’t officially change until the next General Election, obviously Political parties have to change before then.
Under the existing boundaries Gt Hughenden ward was split between both Aylesbury and Wycombe Parliamentary Constituencies. Once it officially changes then it will be under Aylesbury only.
So my comment should have read “outlines the mess in which both Aylesbury and Wycombe Labour parties find themselves in.”
Happy to clarify the situation!
